Norma Melchor Heart & Vascular Institute Receives Highest Rating from Society of Thoracic Surgeons

May 12, 2016 - The Norma Melchor Heart & Vascular Institute at El Camino Hospital has achieved a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Database for outcomes in aortic valve replacement (AVR)1and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)2. This is the highest rating offered by the STS and positions El Camino Hospital in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for outstanding performance and outcomes for these procedures.

“Our outcomes reflect the dedication and commitment of our entire team and our program consistently receives accolades for our work,” said Vincent Gaudiani, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon and medical director of the Norma Melchor Heart & Vascular Institute, and a Palo Alto Medical Foundation doctor. “Every case is jointly reviewed by our world-class cardiovascular specialists in order to find an individualized solution that is best suited for the patient.”

El Camino Hospital doctors perform hundreds of advanced cardiac and thoracic procedures each year. Patients experience very low risk of complication after an AVR is performed at El Camino Hospital compared to 95% of US Hospitals.

When performing CABG surgery, our doctors utilize endoscopic vein harvesting and arterial techniques to bypass the damaged arteries and reroute the blood around the blockage. Patients undergoing a CABG at El Camino Hospital are less likely to have complications related to bypass surgery compared to 95% of US Hospitals.

The STS National Database was established as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons and has become the gold standard for clinical registries.
