May 2024 Health Tips

May brings gorgeous flowers, longer days, and the urge to do a little spring spruce-up. Make your spring a little healthier with a few quick and easy tips.

1 minute: Throw away your kitchen sponges. Yes, you can run them in the dishwasher or microwave them to kill some bacteria, but chances are you’ve been holding on to them longer than you should – which is only about a week or two. Invest in some silicon sponges instead. They are more durable, scrub better, and are easier to clean. Plus, they dry faster so they are less likely to harbor bacteria or mildew.

5 minutes: Pick up a bouquet of spring flowers. If you don’t have a garden, check out the farmer’s market or the grocery store. A few stems of sunflowers, daffodils or tulips will only cost a few bucks, but will brighten any space and help chase away the doldrums.

15 minutes: Find any item in your pantry that has been there for more than a year. Chances are it’s either expired, or you probably won’t use it anyway. Throw it away and make room for fresh (and maybe even healthier) items! Don’t forget to look for expiration dates on flour, sugar, and other staples. They don’t last forever!

30 minutes: No time (or money) for a professional pedicure? Treat your tootsies to some pampering at home – no polish required! If you do have polish on, remove it first. Then sit on the edge of the tub and submerge your feet for 10-15 minutes in warm water with a cup or two of Epsom salts added in. Dry your feet thoroughly, then rub in some cuticle cream (or a rich moisturizer) to your cuticles and heels. If necessary, use a pumice stone to help smooth rough spots on heels. Gently push cuticles back with an orange stick or the corner of a towel. Cut toenails straight across and file lightly if needed. Massage your legs and feet for 5-10 minutes with a good moisturizer, using firm upward strokes on your legs and firm pressure on your heels, instep and the balls of your feet. (Bonus points if you can get a partner to do it for you!) Apply polish if desired, or just don a pair of socks before bed and wake up with soft and renewed feet!
