Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) provide a wide range of primary healthcare services for women of all ages — from annual checkups and preconception care to labor, delivery and postpartum care.
Specialized Training in Women’s Care
CNMs are registered nurses who have graduated from a nurse-midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). In addition, they must pass a national certification exam that meets strict requirements set by state and national health agencies. They have the training and experience to provide primary care for women of all ages — your midwife can provide everything from well-woman and maternity care to peri-menopausal and postmenopausal care and support.
A Personalized Birth Plan
At El Camino Hospital, our nurse-midwives tailor care to meet your specific needs and wishes. Your midwife will educate you about the physical and emotional changes you go through during pregnancy, help you develop a personalized birth plan, and teach you how to maintain good health.
As members of El Camino Hospital’s care team, our midwives maintain a close relationship with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and other clinicians to ensure that a specialist is available if complications arise. During labor, you have the same choices for pain relief — and inducing labor, if necessary — as you have with an obstetrician. Midwives are licensed to prescribe a full range of medications and treatments.
Our midwives are focused on maintaining the best conditions possible for a safe, healthy outcome for you and your baby.
