Our team approach to care gives you the benefit of multiple disciplines working together to create a personalized care plan for you. Our cancer experts work closely with you and your primary care doctor through screening, diagnosis and treatment.

Specialists in the El Camino Health cancer program include:

  • Breast reconstruction surgeons – Plastic surgeons who specialize in reconstructing a natural looking breast following mastectomy.
  • Breast surgeons – Doctors with primary training and focus on surgically treating breast cancer.
  • Colorectal surgeons – Doctors whose primary training and focus is on surgically treating diseases of the colon and rectum.
  • General surgeons – Many surgeons at El Camino Health are board certified, with specialized fellowship training in cancers of the breast, lungs, digestive organs, urinary tract and other major systems.
  • Medical oncologists – Doctors who manage cancers using chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
  • Palliative care doctors – Doctors who work with patients in the hospital to manage pain and symptoms of cancer and its treatment.
  • Pathologists – Doctors who examine tumor tissue and help diagnose the type and stage of tumors.
  • Radiation oncologists – Doctors who use radiation beams — with the latest advances such as CyberKnife® and RapidArc® — to shrink or destroy tumor cells.
  • Radiologists – Doctors who interpret computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray and other images to detect tumors.

Other Cancer Team Members

Your team will include an oncology coordinator, who’ll help coordinate all aspects of your care by scheduling your appointments, answering questions and putting you in touch with helpful resources.

Other members of the team your doctor or oncology coordinator may refer you to include:

  • Oncology coordinator – Offers guidance for you and your family from diagnosis through treatment. They serve as a point of contact, providing education as well as coordination of care and support tailored to your specific needs. As patient advocates, they work hard to remove barriers to care as well as to empower you to make informed decisions along the way.
  • Nutritionist – Specializes in addressing the unique nutritional needs of people who have or have had cancer.
  • Genetic counselor – Develops targeted treatment plans based on specific genetic profiles, help you assess your risk for cancer and help you decide whether you should be tested for any genetic markers that may predispose you and your family to cancer.
  • Nurse practitioner – Works with physicians to diagnose and treat common medical conditions and manage treatment side effects in patients.
  • Complementary care providers – Provide art and music therapy through our Healing Arts Program, as well as offer spiritual care, massage and more.
  • Social worker – Assist patients in accessing in-home, family and medical resources, and they offer emotional support to patients and their loved ones.

In addition, other team members work closely with palliative care doctors to help manage symptoms of your disease and side effects of your treatment, as well as psychological and social challenges of having cancer.

Tumor Board

Through weekly multidisciplinary conferences called tumor boards, a team of cancer doctors and other experts reviews patient cases and discusses potential treatment plans. Achieving consensus among our experts ensures we’re all working together toward a common goal — to deliver the best care possible for your special circumstances.

El Camino Health has a general cancer tumor board weekly, with a specialty board dedicated to breast cancer cases in Mountain View. We also have a monthly general tumor board on our Los Gatos Campus.
