In November, El Camino Hospital Foundation allocated $500,000 of unrestricted donations. The grants will enable the Hospital to continue providing Answers in the Aisles at the Los Altos Safeway and improving the obstetric patient experience. They will also provide funding for newly emerging needs.
One grant will promote advance care planning in the El Camino Hospital community, which will help health care professionals better understand the wishes of patients who are not in a position to make or communicate their choices. “These decisions can be overwhelming for people, but the cost of not facing them can be devastating for patients, their families, and health care organizations,” says Chief Nursing Officer Cheryl Reinking. The pilot program will teach community volunteers and hospital staff how to educate patients and families about the value of an advanced care plan and help them prepare advance directives. An initial training of 25 individuals has already been conducted by the California Coalition on Compassionate Care and three more are scheduled.
The second grant will fund transportation to medical appointments and activities important to independent living for limited or no-income seniors and community members who are unable to drive. Although the hospital provides transportation through RoadRunners and more recently with Lyft, a growing number of community members cannot afford the rider’s fee. This allocation will enable the hospital to cover those costs.
Unrestricted donations to the El Camino Fund are allocated twice a year to support the hospital’s strategic priorities. “These gifts give us the flexibility to help the hospital meet critical needs as they arise,” says Foundation President Jodi Barnard. “All the proposals our Allocations Committee carefully reviews are first vetted by the hospital’s executive leadership team to ensure they will enhance patient care, strengthen the organization, and improve the health of the community.” You can make an unrestricted donation online at www.elcaminohospital.org/donate.
