January 2, 2019 – The El Camino Hospital Foundation received a leadership gift from Julia and Dr. Peter Fung to name the Peter C. Fung, MD Stroke Center and endow it in perpetuity. Dr. Fung served as medical director of El Camino Hospital’s stroke program from 2005 to 2015 and is a passionate supporter of the program. This is the first time the couple has made such a significant gift.
“We are honored by the Fungs' generosity and support. It is a testament to their commitment to El Camino Hospital and this community. Their generosity will enable El Camino Hospital to further enhance the services and treatments offered to individuals experiencing a stroke throughout Santa Clara County,” said Jodi Barnard, president of El Camino Hospital Foundation.
“It is our greatest wish that this gift will build a legacy of compassionate stroke care at El Camino Hospital and continue to provide comprehensive stroke services to our community. My wife and I are fortunate to be able to give back to the community where we have lived and worked for so long. My passion in this field was ignited when my mother experienced a series of strokes and I have spent my career encouraging others to become champions of stroke care,” said Dr. Fung.
Dr. Fung came to El Camino Hospital in 2004 and led the Stroke Program until 2015 when he was elected to the El Camino Healthcare District Board of Directors. He is a neurologist specializing in stroke and clinical neurophysiology and is a founding member of the El Camino Hospital Chinese Health Initiative. Dr. Fung believes strongly in healthy life styles for community residents and in stroke risk reduction through exercise, and hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes control. In addition to caring for patients at El Camino Hospital, he has a private practice in Sunnyvale and consults on cases throughout the Greater Bay Area.
Dr. Fung earned a medical degree from the University of Hong Kong and a master’s degree in neurophysiology from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center and his residency in neurology at the University of Michigan.
Under Dr. Fung’s leadership, the stroke program at El Camino Hospital earned The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers and Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association which recognizes the hospital for achieving 85% or higher compliance with all Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Achievement Measures and 75% or higher compliance with five or more Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Measures for two or more consecutive years and achieving Time to Thrombolytic Therapy ≤ 60 minutes 75% or more of applicable acute ischemic stroke patients to improve quality of patient care and outcomes.
