El Camino Hospital Receives Prestigious ANCC Magnet Recognition® for Third Consecutive Time

Mountain View, CA, June 18, 2015 - El Camino Hospital announced today it attained the prestigious Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center® (ANCC) for the third consecutive time, the only hospital in Northern California to achieve this level of re-designation and only one of five in California. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes hospitals that demonstrate superior patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice and is considered the highest honor for quality nursing. A selected group of 414 healthcare organizations out of nearly 6,000 U.S. healthcare organizations have received Magnet recognition and just 103 worldwide have received it three times consecutively.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the superior care provided by our entire nursing team," said Tomi Ryba, president and CEO of El Camino Hospital. "Our nurses partner with our multidisciplinary healthcare team to achieve exceptional patient outcomes and provide world-class personalized service for every patient."

The Magnet recognition, requiring renewal every four years, is granted after a rigorous process that includes comprehensive documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes in order to earn an on-site visit. After this rigorous on-site review process, the Commission on Magnet reviews the completed appraiser report and votes to determine whether Magnet recognition will be granted. The report identified two main areas of exemplary achievement at El Camino Hospital:

  • Nursing Certification: Exceeding goals in nursing specialty certification with a 30% increase in the past year with over 460 El Camino nurses achieving board certification, and particularly in the Operating Room where 67% of the nurses are certified in operating room nursing.

  • Nurse Sensitive Indicators: Outperforming national benchmarks for Acute Myocardial Infarctions (AMI) and Pneumonia for two straight years.

"The nursing care provided at El Camino Hospital is exceptional and it is an honor to be part of an elite team at the top of their profession," said Cheryl Reinking, MS, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer. "This achievement was made possible by the over 1,000 nurses who ensure patients are treated with respect and receive the highest quality care they both expect and deserve. I want to thank our nurses for always putting patients first and for achieving our goals together."

Independent research has shown that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to hospitals and their communities, such as improving patient care, safety and satisfaction, and attracting and retaining top nursing talent.
