Breastfeeding can often make a difference in the health and welfare of mothers and babies. El Camino Hospital’s lactation support services offer you and your baby many levels of assistance. We have special registered nurses who are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and lactation educators, both of whom are available to help you.
A certified lactation consultant will make a personal visit to breastfeeding mothers while they are on the mother-baby unit (referral required in Mountain View only). If you should have concerns about breastfeeding while you are in the hospital our nurses have training to assist you as well.
Should your baby need the services of the NICU we offer support to any mother wishing to breastfeed her baby. An IBCLC consultant will be part of the baby's care team and will assist in developing a plan to meet both you and your baby's needs.
Whether you choose to breastfeed or not, we will contact you three to five days after delivery to provide support and answer any questions.
Other Breastfeeding Resources
We offer the use of Medela BabyWeigh scales free-of-charge at the Maternal Connections Lactation Center in Mountain View and Maternal Network in Los Gatos. These scales help you calculate your baby's breastmilk intake and continued growth.
By weighing your baby before and after nursing, the BabyWeigh scale calculates the baby's intake for you within two grams (0.1 oz). Our staff will assist you should you have any questions about how to use the scales. Seeing your results may offer that extra reassurance that you and your baby are on the right track.
The Medela Baby Weigh scales are located in the Maternal Connections Mother Baby community room in Mountain View, and in the Lactation office in Los Gatos. You do not need an appointment to use the scales in Mountain View but in Los Gatos an appointment is required due to limited space and availability. You may also rent a scale for home use. For more information, please call the Maternal Connections Lactation Center in Mountain View at 650-988-8287, or the Maternal Network in Los Gatos at 408-866-3905.
Due to limited space in our community room, we ask that you not bring in strollers. The community room room is available 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Saturday; closed Sundays and all holidays.
