Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery

Last Updated 8/20/2010 3:08:50 PM

To understand laparoscopic bariatric surgery, it is helpful to understand that it is one of two major bariatric surgery techniques: laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery. Which technique a doctor will utilize depends on the patient’s health and weight.

Open Bariatric Surgery

Open bariatric surgery requires a larger incision that runs from just above the navel to between the patient's breastbone. Open bariatric surgery is associated with a longer recovery period, but is sometimes it is the patient’s best option.

Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery

Laparoscopic bariatric surgery can be performed through several small incisions, with a video camera providing the surgeon with visual guidance. A laparoscope is inserted through an abdominal incision to give the bariatric surgeon a magnified view of the patient’s digestive organs.

The operation is performed using special instruments that are inserted into the small incisions. The surgeon watches what he/she is doing on a television monitor. The advantages of laparoscopic bariatric surgery include less pain, a faster recovery, and smaller scars.
