At El Camino Hospital, many of our orthopedic surgeons specialize in hand and wrist surgery.
The hand is a complicated part of the human body. It is made up of bone, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels. When any aspect of the hand or wrist becomes injured from overuse at work (computer usage, for example), through sports or in some other manner, the hand will not function properly.
Sometimes a hand or wrist injury will heal on its own or through the use of non-surgical treatments, such as medication, splints, therapy or injections. In other cases, surgery will be necessary in order to regain normal use of the hand and wrist.
Types of Hand Surgery
At El Camino Hospital, hand surgeons typically treat the following conditions:
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- tennis elbow
- wrist pain
- sports injuries of the hand and wrist
- fractures of the hand, wrist, and forearm
- trigger finger
- arthritis
- nerve injury
- tendon injury
- birth defects
Many of our surgeons have received specialized training in the treatment of hand problems in addition to their board-certified training in orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery or general surgery.
If you have pain anywhere in your hand, wrist or arm, particularly pain that refuses to go away despite rest or medication, it may be time to consult a hand surgeon.
