Heart & Vascular Institute Clinical Trials

Last Updated 8/18/2010 8:07:28 AM

The Heart & Vascular Institute conducts advanced clinical research comparable to academic medical centers. Our physicians are making a variety of clinical trials available to their patients, giving them access to new experimental therapies for conditions that may not respond adequately to existing approaches, as well as advancing the treatment technologies for the region.

Carotid Artery Disease

Clinical trial Purpose
ACT I To evaluate the equivalence of carotid artery stenting using the Abbott Vascular Xact(R) stent and Emboshield(R) embolic protection system when compared to endarterectomy in low-surgical-risk patients. This is a multicenter randomized study with three out of four patients receiving a stent.
Post-market studies To evaluate the use of FDA-approved carotid stents and embolic protection systems in high-risk patients: CHOICE (Abbott), SAPPHIRE WW (Cordis), and CREATE PAS (ev3)

Electrophysiology

Clinical trial Purpose
OPTIMISE CRT A randomized study to evaluate the benefit of using the Quick Opt method compared to the standard method of programming a Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Device (CRT-D) to improve mechanical indices, symptoms, and exercise.

Coronary Artery Disease

Clinical trial Purpose
EDUCATE The purpose of the study is to better understand the safety and efficacy of 12 months versus 30 months of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in patients that have received the Endeavor drug eluting stent for coronary artery stenosis. In addition, data will be collected to evaluate the relationship between DAPT compliance and therapy interruptions, and the resulting clinical events.

Lower Extremity Disease

Clinical trial Purpose
DEFINITIVE LE A non-randomized study to evaluate the intermediate and long-term effectiveness of the SilverHawk and TurboHawk peripheral plaque excision systems for the endovascular treatment of peripheral artery disease in the femoropopliteal and tibial-peroneal arteries
iCAST A non-randomized study to evaluate the non-inferiority of the iCAST covered stent (Atrium Medical) for treating iliac artery stenosis in patients with de novo or restenotic lesions in the common and/or external iliac arteries.

Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Clinical trial Purpose
EVEREST II (REALISM) Continued access registry to provide additional information regarding the endovascular approach to treatment of mitral valve regurgitation using the Evalve Cardiovascular Valve Repair System (MitraClip) and to evaluate changes in functional capacity after successful MitraClip treatment.

Stroke

Clinical trial Purpose
CRYSTAL AF A randomized study to evaluate whether patients who have suffered a cryptogenic stroke, a stroke of unknown cause, may benefit from the timely detection of atrial fibrillation using the Reveal XT Insertable Cardiac Monitor device.
