Fulfilling the Promise

At a press conference on November 7, the Foundation kicked off Fulfilling the Promise, the fundraising initiative for mental health services at El Camino Hospital. It was an opportunity to introduce the hospital's plans for expanding its mental health program to meet a serious and growing demand for care, even as other health providers are reducing services. This includes developing plans for a new, flexibly configured inpatient facility that can be adapted to meet changing needs and the expansion of outpatient programs, particularly for women, youth and seniors.

Donna and John Shoemaker, who are steering this effort as chairs of the Foundation's Philanthropy Council for Mental Health and who recently made their own $1 million gift, explained their reasons for taking the lead and encouraged others to join them. The press conference also provided an opportunity to highlight El Camino Hospital's patient and family-centered approach to mental health care, including its commitment to ensure appropriate discharge and follow-up planning, as well as its efforts to partner with other community providers as we work on a coordinated approach to addressing our region's mental health care needs.
