Hope to Health Has Busy Fall Season

Last Updated 1/24/2013 9:49:57 AM

October was a busy month for the members of hope to health, El Camino Hospital's women's philanthropy group.

Members of the Mountain View and Los Gatos chapters raised breast cancer awarenessImage of Breast Cancer Awareness Information on October 17 and 26, 2012. Attired in pink they pushed a well-stocked cart around each hospital campus, distributing information and goodies and urging women to take the "pinky promise" to get mammograms. More than 1,000 women made the commitment this year, bringing the total over three years to 2,500.

Current and prospective members of Hope to Health Los Gatos attended "Tranquility: Finding Inner Harmony," a luncheon and health demonstration at the Zen Garden House of Hakone Gardens in Saratoga on October 16, 2012. Linda Scheer, a specialist in vocational rehabilitation and Tai Chi gave a demonstration of the low-impact, meditative and graceful form of exercise, explaining how it promotes strength, balance, relaxation, and the health of both mind and body.

Cognitive vitality was the subject of a reception and presentation hosted by the women of Hope to Health in Mountain View on October 23, 2012. Dr. James Doty, director of the Neuroscience Institute at El Camino Hospital, director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, and clinical professor of neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, spoke about the beneficial impact of philanthropic giving on mental health.

Members of Hope to Health pool their membership dues and then vote to determine which hospital programs they wish to support on each campus. They are currently evaluating a variety of grant proposals for programs that benefit women and families. Their funding decisions will be announced in February.
