Community Benefit

Last Updated Wednesday, July 02, 2014 1:31:19 PM

El Camino Hospital fulfills its responsibility to the community by not only providing high quality medical care, but also committing resources to deliver a variety of programs that improve the health of the underserved through school nurses, mental health counseling, education, and other services.

What Is Community Benefit
El Camino Hospital makes a major contribution to our community through a yearly allocation of funds to programs that serve residents of the hospital community. Funding is available through grant and sponsorship opportunities.

El Camino Healthcare District provides separate funds to support programs that serve residents who live, work, or go to school in the District.

What We Fund
Addressing the unmet health needs of the underserved is the overarching purpose of El Camino Hospital's Community Benefit Program. Four key priorities have been identified for Community Benefit funds:

  • Healthcare Access
  • Mental Health
  • Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
  • Community Health Education/Health Literacy

Understanding Community Health Needs
The community health needs assessment (CHNA) informs the investment of Community Benefit funds in order to improve the health of those living in the hospital’s service area.

El Camino Hospital’s 2013 CHNA was conducted in order to understand the most significant health needs in the hospital’s community. The CHNA combines public health data with community input gathered from public health experts, front line service providers, patients, and residents. Health indicators were summarized and filtered to reveal a set of top health needs across Santa Clara County. These needs were then reviewed by the Community Benefit Advisory Council (CBAC), which consists of community members with a broad range of knowledge regarding health disparities in the local community. The CBAC meets regularly to discuss emerging health needs in the community and to review recommended grants.
